Shin Splints Shin Splints / Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS)

The Tibia is the "shin" bone of the lower leg and the medial margin of the Tibia is the inner margin. MTSS occurs when the tendons of the lower leg that attach to the inner margin of the Tibia, irritate the bone tissue through overuse.

Symptoms
MTSS is characterised by pain, tenderness and swelling on the outer part of the knee and thigh. It is generally aggravated by weight bearing exercise and relieved by rest.

Causes
MTSS is generally considered an overuse condition, so a repetitive activity like running is commonly related.

  • Increase in activity
  • Running on hard ground
  • Incorrect footwear
  • Abnormal foot biomechanics, e.g. flat feet
  • Abnormal knee / hip biomechanics
