Shoulder Impingement (Subacromial Impingment Syndrome)
Shoulder Impingement is an irritation of the structures that lie under the bony ‘roof’ of the shoulder. The structures that can become irritated are usually either a tendon or a bursa.
Symptoms
The injury is characterised by sharp pain and tenderness across the joint line which can radiate into the neck and/or down the arm. Overhead movements are particularly affected, and putting the arm into a shirt or jacket sleeve is often extremely difficult due to pain.
Causes
The injury will often occur through forceful repetitive overhead movements, such as a tennis/badminton serve, but it also can occur accumulatively through a habitual rounded shoulder posture as often adopted by desk workers.
